Mighty Oil Filter Cross Reference

Mighty M8170 cartridge element beside a FRAM PH8170 spin-on can, captioned same digits, wrong filter

Mighty oil filters come from Mighty Auto Parts, which sells only to repair shops, so most owners find one on the car after a service. Most Mighty numbers are an M plus FRAM's digits, so the M3614 crosses to WIX 51348 like the PH3614. Not all of them do: the M8170 is a BMW cartridge, not FRAM's PH8170.

Mighty Oil Filter Cross Reference Chart

Mighty publishes no public cross reference, so I built this one from WIX's interchange lookup, which accepts Mighty numbers by name, and checked the FRAM and ACDelco columns by running the same lookup from the other brand's side. The sizes and fitment are from WIX's own part pages.

Mighty numbers that match another brand's digits

For these five, the borrowed digits work. WIX returns the same part for the Mighty number and for the FRAM or ACDelco number it copies, though it flags the M3600 and its 51516 as "not a direct interchange" and tells you to check the application listing.

Mighty numbers whose digits mislead or match nothing

The M9509 is the one most GM owners will meet. WIX sends it to the same WL10290 it gives the PF64 and FRAM's PH12060, the 22 psi family GM separates from the 15 psi PF48.

Two more numbers did not resolve cleanly. The M2870 returns three different WIX parts, the 51034, 51393 and 51088, and only the 51393 is WIX's answer for FRAM's PH2870A. The M9501 is a number WIX recognises as valid but has no replacement for.

What Mighty Oil Filter Numbers Mean

An M number is Mighty's standard catalogue number, and K&N's Mighty index lists 66 Mighty oil filters, from the M1 to the M9513. Most older numbers copy FRAM's PH digits, a few copy ACDelco's PF digits, and the newer M95 numbers copy nobody.

The same index lists MX numbers beside the M numbers, such as the MX3614, which WIX also crosses to the 51348. Mighty publishes no key to what the X means. A T prefix marks TecSelect, Mighty's bulk-pack line, and the T4612 is the one owners have cut open.

The M8170 Is Not a FRAM PH8170

This is the number where copying the digits goes wrong. WIX crosses the M8170 to its 51223, a metal-free cartridge element 99 mm tall and 83 mm across for BMW from 1996 to 2010, the same part WIX gives FRAM's CH8081. K&N's Mighty index sends it to the HP-7007, which is also a cartridge.

mighty m8170 is not the fram ph8170
Mighty's M8170 and FRAM's PH8170 share four digits and nothing else: WIX crosses the M8170 to a 99 mm BMW cartridge element, while the PH8170 is a 57 mm spin-on can on a 3/4-16 thread.

FRAM's PH8170 is a 2.260 in spin-on can on a 3/4-16 thread, the small-engine size WIX crosses to its 57035. FRAM's own list for it includes the BMW i3's range-extender engine, so a BMW owner who searches 8170 can land on either part. One drops into a cartridge housing; the other screws onto a filter pad.

The M4612: Two Lookups, Two Filters

WIX and K&N disagree on this number, and I could not settle it from a Mighty document. WIX crosses the M4612 to its 57092, a 75 mm can, 82 mm across, for Mitsubishi and the 2001 to 2005 Sebring and Stratus. K&N sends the M4612 to its SO-1008, the part it gives the Purolator L14612.

Both thread on the same engines with the same gasket, which is why the mix-up survives. The owner evidence leans towards the L14612 size: a 2010 teardown of a TecSelect T4612 found a Purolator-built can that posters matched to the Purolator Classic L14612. Measure the filter coming off before you buy by WIX's row.

Who Makes Mighty Oil Filters?

No single factory. Mighty Auto Parts is the US arm of Grupo Gonher of Monterrey, Mexico, which lists Mighty as its US arm, founded in 1963 and acquired in 2009. Mighty says its filters are made "globally by many of the leading automotive filtration suppliers" and names none of them.

The suppliers have changed over the years. In 2004, owners on Bob Is the Oil Guy said Mighty had told them Champion built its Engine Guard II filters. Trade press then reported Mighty choosing Purolator to supply both its premium and value-grade spin-ons, and owners described Purolator-built Mighty cans in 2010 and 2015.

The recent cans are different again. A January 2023 teardown of an M-3614 from a quick-change shop found "Hecho en Mexico" on the can beside a "USA Brand" sticker. Posters there attributed it to Gonher, but no Mighty or Gonher document confirms who built it.

What Efficiency Mighty Publishes

Mighty sells three oil filter lines: Mighty MAX, Engine Guard and TecSelect. The only efficiency figure on its oil filter page is a 95% rating for Engine Guard, with no particle size attached.

A percentage without a micron size cannot be compared with anything. Carquest, for example, rates its Premium at 99.5% at 20 microns, because the same filter scores very differently against small particles and large ones.

The rest of what Mighty publishes is construction:

  • Mighty MAX: "M-Pleat" high-efficiency media, silicone anti-drain-back valve, pre-lubricated gasket, spiral-wound core, metal end caps
  • Engine Guard: synthetic microfibre media, nitrile gasket, anti-drain-back valve
  • TecSelect: sold in bulk-pack cartons, described only as meeting OE requirements

WIX does publish a figure for some equivalents. Its WL10290 for the M9509 and its 51348 for the M3614 are both rated at 21 microns nominal, which is a statement about the WIX part, not about the Mighty can.

Is There a Mighty Cross Reference Chart PDF?

Not a public one. Mighty's cross-reference data sits in its MICPlus catalogue, which Mighty updates quarterly and supplies through its sales reps online, on USB or in print. Mighty sells only to automotive professionals, so the catalogue goes to shops rather than owners.

The "Mighty oil filter cross reference chart PDF" results that come up in a search are pages on unrelated domains with no Mighty document behind them. The two manufacturer lookups above, WIX's and K&N's, both accept Mighty numbers directly.

How to Cross Reference a Mighty Oil Filter

  1. Read the full number off the can, including any X or T, since MX and T numbers are separate lines.
  2. Search it in WIX's lookup, then run the WIX answer back through K&N's Mighty index as a second opinion.
  3. Do not trust the digits on their own. They match FRAM on the M3614 and fail completely on the M8170.
  4. If two lookups disagree, as on the M4612, measure the old filter's height and diameter and match those.
  5. On a GM engine, check the bypass. The M9509 is the PF64 size and the M48 the PF48 size, and they share a thread but not a bypass setting.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the FRAM equivalent of a Mighty M3614? The FRAM PH3614. WIX crosses both to its 51348, a 3/4-16 spin-on 86 mm tall for Toyota, Ford, Mazda and Chrysler, and K&N sends the M3614 to its SO-1002. WIX also lists a 57145XP against the M3614, which is the narrower 68 mm can for the PH4386 applications.

Is the Mighty M8170 the same as the FRAM PH8170? No. WIX crosses the M8170 to its 51223, a 99 mm metal-free cartridge for BMW from 1996 to 2010, which FRAM sells as the CH8081. The PH8170 is a 2.260 in spin-on on a 3/4-16 thread that WIX crosses to its 57035.

Who makes Mighty oil filters? Mighty says its filters come from several global filtration suppliers and names none. Owners reported Champion-built filters in 2004 and Purolator-built filters in 2010 and 2015, and a 2023 M-3614 teardown found a can marked "Hecho en Mexico". Mighty's owner, Grupo Gonher, is based in Monterrey, Mexico.

Can I buy Mighty oil filters at a parts store? Not usually. Mighty sells through franchised distributors to repair shops and fleets, not to the public, so the filter on your car most likely came from a shop service. For a replacement, cross the Mighty number through WIX's lookup and buy the equivalent from any brand.

What to Do Next

Before you buy a replacement for a Mighty filter, read the number off the can and search it in WIX's lookup rather than copying its digits into FRAM's catalogue. If the car is a GM with an M9509 or an M48, check which bypass setting the engine needs, since those two thread onto the same filter pad.
