WS8172 and PH8172 Oil Filter Cross Reference

Share
FRAM PH8172 can at 65 mm beside the 85 mm Denso 150-2010 that Denso's search returns for it

The FRAM PH8172 is a short 3/4-16 spin-on, 2.560 in tall, with an anti-drainback valve and an 8.5 to 12 psi bypass. Its equivalents are WIX 51056, Baldwin B1410, ACDelco PF2210, STP S3512, Purolator L35310, NAPA Gold 1056 and Kohler 12-050-01. WS8172 is a Walmi number that no manufacturer lookup crosses.

PH8172 Equivalents by Brand

These are the parts the manufacturer lookups return for the PH8172. WIX's lookup sends the PH8172 to its 51056, and I checked every other row by searching that brand's number in WIX's lookup to confirm it lands on the same part.

FRAM sells the PH8172 only in its HD range. WIX returns nothing for an XG8172 or a TG8172, so there is no Ultra Synthetic or Titanium version to cross to.

What Is a WS8172?

The WS prefix belongs to Walmi. WIX's lookup names Walmi as the brand behind WS numbers, and K&N's Walmi index lists 28 of them, from WS2 to WS10060. Their digits match FRAM numbers, and where I checked, the parts match too: WIX sends the Walmi WS3614 to its 51348, exactly where it sends the FRAM PH3614, and the WS4967 to the 51394 like the PH4967.

The WS8172 itself is not on K&N's list. WIX's lookup recognises the WS8172 as a valid competitor number but says it has no replacement, and Baldwin's search does not find it at all.

So the pattern suggests the WS8172 is Walmi's PH8172, but no manufacturer document I could find confirms it. The pattern also breaks elsewhere: WIX sends the STP S3512 to the 51056 but the Walmi WS3512 to a different, wider can. Measure a WS8172 against the specs below before treating it as a PH8172.

PH8172 Size and Specs

FRAM's PH8172 page lists a 2.560 in can with a 2.990 in outside diameter, a 3/4-16 thread, an anti-drainback valve and an 8.5 to 12 psi bypass. The gasket is 2.480 in inside and 2.830 in outside diameter, 0.250 in thick.

WIX rates the 51056 at 325 psi burst and 21 micron nominal, with an anti-drainback valve and a 2.734 by 2.430 in gasket. Baldwin gives its B1410 a 23 micron nominal and 45 micron absolute rating and names the Kohler 12-050-01 as its competitor number. FRAM publishes no burst or efficiency figure for the PH8172.

How Tall Is a PH8172? Four Answers

The thread and bypass agree across the brands. The height does not, and one manufacturer's answer is a different filter altogether.

four answers for one ph8172
FRAM's PH8172 and the WIX 51056 and Baldwin B1410 that cross to it are all short 3/4-16 cans between 65 and 73 mm tall, while Denso's search answer, the 150-2010, stands 85 mm because Denso groups the PH8172 by shared Chrysler applications rather than by size.

Baldwin's search sends the PH8172 and the WIX 51056 to its B1410, which is 8 mm taller than FRAM's can. That is within the range a short filter usually has room for. Denso's answer is not.

Why Denso's Answer Is 20 mm Taller

Denso sends the PH8172 to its 150-2010. Denso's own part page gives the 150-2010 an 85 mm height and a 64 mm gasket ID, and WIX crosses that Denso number to the 86 mm 51348, the FL-910S-size can.

The reason is in Denso's interchange list. It files the PH8172 beside the PH16, PH3600 and PH3614, and its vehicle list includes the 1984 to 1987 Dodge Charger and the Omni, the same Chrysler 2.2L cars FRAM lists the PH8172 for. Denso has grouped by vehicle, not by can.

On an engine that takes the PH8172 because space is tight, that is 20 mm of filter that may not clear. Cross a PH8172 to the WIX, Baldwin or other short-can rows above, not to Denso.

What the PH8172 Fits

FRAM's PH8172 application list runs to 392 rows. The cars are mostly old European ones:

  • Renault Dauphine, Caravelle, R8, R10, R12, R15, R16, R17, R18, R5, LeCar, Alliance and Encore, 1957 to 1986
  • Fiat 124 with the 1.8L and 2.0L, 131 with the 1.8L, Brava, Strada and X1/9, 1975 to 1983
  • Lotus Europa, 1967 to 1975
  • Maserati 228i, 430i and Spyder with the 2.8L, 1989 to 1991
  • Dodge Charger 2.2L, 1985 to 1987, and the 1986 Omni 2.2L

The rest are off-road utility vehicles: Argo amphibious ATVs from 2006 to 2021, Cub Cadet Volunteer UTVs from 2007 to 2020 and Mahindra mPact and Retriever UTVs from 2015 to 2021. WIX and Baldwin describe their equivalents as small-engine filters, mainly for equipment with Kohler, Briggs & Stratton and Kawasaki engines.

The Wider Can That Shares Its Applications

Merged cross reference charts print the Chrysler 4419970, ACDelco PF952 and Motorcraft FL-313 alongside the PH8172, and Denso files the 4419970 under the same 150-2010. WIX sends all three to its 51335 instead, along with the Walmi WS3512, and WIX's 51335 is 63 mm tall but 93 mm wide, on the same 3/4-16 thread.

That can covers some of the same cars, since WIX lists Renault among its applications. Both thread on, but they are not the same filter: the PH8172 is about 17 mm narrower. On the Chrysler 2.2L, a Shelby forum member in 2013 recommended the PF952 as slightly smaller than the Mopar 4419970 and easier to get past the alternator, though WIX puts both on the same 51335.

Is the PH8172 the Same as the PH8170?

No. FRAM's PH8170 is 2.260 in tall, 0.3 in shorter than the PH8172, with a 9 to 17 psi bypass. WIX crosses it to its 57035, not the 51056, and FRAM's PH8170 list is mostly different vehicles, including Aprilia motorcycles and the BMW i3.

Watch the Briggs & Stratton numbers too. The Briggs 491056 ends in the same four digits as the WIX 51056, but WIX crosses it to the 51348, the taller FL-910S-size can.

How to Cross Reference a PH8172

  1. Use WIX 51056, Baldwin B1410, ACDelco PF2210, STP S3512, Purolator L35310 or NAPA Gold 1056. Each lands on the same short can in WIX's lookup.
  2. Do not use Denso's 150-2010. It is 85 mm tall against the PH8172's 65 mm.
  3. Do not swap in a 51335-size filter from an old chart without checking the width, since it is 93 mm across.
  4. Check a WS8172 by measurement. No lookup confirms what it is, so compare it with 2.560 in tall, 2.990 in wide and a 3/4-16 thread.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the WIX equivalent of the FRAM PH8172? The WIX 51056, or the 51056MP multipack. WIX's lookup returns both for the PH8172, and returns the 51056 for the Kohler 12-050-01, ACDelco PF2210, STP S3512 and Purolator L35310 too. WIX lists it at 2.638 in tall on a 3/4-16 thread with an 8 to 11 psi bypass and an anti-drainback valve.

Is the PH8172 the same as a Kohler 12-050-01? They cross to the same parts. WIX sends both the PH8172 and the Kohler 12-050-01 to its 51056, and Baldwin sends both to its B1410, which lists the Kohler number as its competitor part. FRAM's own PH8172 page does not name Kohler.

What brand is WS8172? WS is Walmi's prefix, which WIX's lookup identifies by name. Walmi's WS numbers usually reuse FRAM's digits, so the WS8172 is likely its version of the PH8172. WIX recognises the number but lists no replacement, and K&N and Baldwin do not list it, so its size is unconfirmed.

Can I use a Denso 150-2010 instead of a PH8172? Not where space is tight. Denso's search does return the 150-2010 for the PH8172, but Denso lists it at 85 mm tall against FRAM's 65 mm, and WIX crosses it to the 51348, a different filter. It groups the two by shared vehicle applications rather than by matching size.

What to Do Next

If you have a PH8172 or a Kohler 12-050-01, any part in the first table fits. If the box in your hand says WS8172, put it next to the old filter before you fit it, and if a chart hands you a Denso 150-2010 or a 4419970-size can, the sections above explain why the number matched and the filter did not.
