The 6.6 Duramax takes two completely different filters depending on model year, and the split is not where most guides put it.

I set out to rank oil filters for the 6.6L Duramax and spent the first half of the job on a question I did not expect to matter: which filter does this engine actually take. The answer is three filters across the engine's life, the boundaries fall on model years rather than engine codes, and one of the numbers everybody still quotes was retired by the manufacturer that owns it.

The Two Filters This Engine Takes, and Where the Line Falls

Every truck from the 2001 LB7 through to the 2019 L5P takes the same filter position, served by the ACDelco PF2232. That covers LB7, LLY, LBZ, LMM, LML and the first three years of the L5P. WIX states the application on its 57202 as Chev-GMC vehicles with the 6.6L Duramax Diesel, 01 to 19, which is the same boundary from an independent catalogue.

That is the part people get wrong. The L5P arrived in 2017, so an L5P owner reading "the L5P uses the PF26" will buy the wrong filter for a 2017, 2018 or 2019 truck.

From 2020 the L5P moved to the ACDelco PF26, GM 12684038. Then in 2024 GM moved it again, to the PF63, sold as the PF63A under GM number 19363567. PPE describes the 2024 change as a move to a filter that is also used on the 5.3L small block and holds less media, while retailer listings for the same part describe it as narrower with a taller pleat height for better cold flow. Those two accounts cannot both be the whole story, and neither GM nor ACDelco publishes a media area for either filter, so there is no way to settle it from published data.

The WIX number everyone still quotes has been retired

Search Amazon for a 2020 or newer Duramax filter and the cross-reference in almost every listing reads "replaces WIX WL10454". Doc's Diesel prints it, and so does every unbranded clone.

WIX's own catalogue lookup says otherwise. Entering WL10454 into the WIX part search returns two rows, both reading WL10454 superseded by WL10255 and WL10255XP. The WL10454 is not the current part.

What makes that worth trusting is that it matches GM's move independently. GM retired the PF26 for the PF63 in 2024, and the WIX number for the PF63 position is the WL10255, carrying the GM number 19330000 in WIX's own OE data. Two manufacturers, two catalogues, the same change. The aftermarket copy has simply not caught up.

PPE states 900 square inches of ultra-fine synthetic microfiber media against a stock filter it describes as 357 square inches of 20-micron capability using a weak leaf spring. Those OEM figures are PPE's characterisation of a competitor's product, not an ACDelco specification, and ACDelco publishes nothing to confirm or contradict them.

The construction detail is unusually specific for this category. PPE lists a neodymium magnet for ferrous debris, a silicone anti-drainback valve, a perforated metal centre tube, a base plate with 47% larger oil passages, and a 450 PSI burst rating it attributes to its TorqSTOP gasket reinforcement. It is a direct replacement for the ACDelco PF2232 with no bracket, spacer or clearance work.

The catch: a 5-micron nominal rating is a media description, not an efficiency measurement, so it cannot be compared like for like against a 99%-at-25-microns claim. Nominal ratings say nothing about what fraction of particles at that size the filter actually holds. PPE publishes no beta ratio and names no test standard, which for a filter built on its filtration numbers is the gap that matters.

Skip it if: you are running short intervals on a stock truck and the factory filter's service life is already longer than the oil's, in which case you are paying roughly triple for capacity you will throw away.

The WIX 57202 is the only filter here whose maker publishes a bypass valve setting, a burst pressure and a flow rate, which makes it the one you can actually check.

WIX's catalogue entry for the 57202 gives enhanced cellulose media, a 15 PSI bypass setting, 335 PSI burst pressure, 9 to 11 GPM maximum flow, an anti-drainback valve, a 13/16-16 thread and a 5.216 inch height. No other brand in this list publishes half of that.

The efficiency figures need reading carefully. WIX lists a nominal 21 micron rating and a beta ratio written as 2/20=6/20, and does not label on the part page what the two numbers describe. The same 21-micron and 2/20=6/20 pair appears on unrelated WIX lube filters such as the 51056MP, so those values describe the enhanced cellulose media line rather than a measurement taken on this filter.

Meanwhile the WIX Amazon listing for the same part claims 99% efficiency at 26 microns and adds, in the same sentence, that the figure was tested on the WIX 51515. So WIX gives you two different efficiency stories for one filter, and is straightforward about the second one belonging to another part.

The catch: enhanced cellulose is the ordinary media grade in the WIX range, not the synthetic used in the XP line, so the 57202 is a competent OE-grade filter rather than an upgrade. If you want WIX synthetic media the part is the 57202XP, and that comes with its own problem covered further down.

The UPF prefix marks this as ACDelco's Ultraguard line rather than a supersession of the PF2232, and the Ultraguard specification is published by GM but appears nowhere on the Amazon listing.

The ACDelco Gold UPF2232R is not a replacement for the PF2232, it is the upgraded Ultraguard version of the same filter, and GM publishes a specification for it that the Amazon listing never mentions.

The UPF prefix is the tell. ACDelco's Ultraguard line sits above the standard PF filters, and GM's own service publication states 98% multi-pass efficiency at 25 to 30 microns for it, along with a shell tested to four times normal oil pressure, a threaded plate rated against spikes eight times normal, an ethylene acrylate anti-drainback valve, and a spiral-wound steel core tested to twice the OE collapse requirement.

That is the most complete OEM filtration figure available for this engine position. It is also, for a 2001 to 2019 Duramax owner who wants the factory part done properly, the obvious choice.

The Amazon listing publishes none of it. No application, no efficiency, no micron size, no interval. Two sentences about ACDelco Gold formerly appearing as ACDelco Professional, and nothing else.

The catch: 19 ratings. For a filter carrying the ACDelco name on GM's own engine, that is a listing almost nobody has found, and it means there is no useful body of owner feedback behind the star average.

The Purolator L35399 is the cheapest filter here with a real manufacturer behind it, and the price is the entire argument for it.

Purolator states high-density multi-fiber media, a PTFE-treated gasket and engine cleanliness for up to 10,000 miles. Its filtration claim is that the filter captures over 96.5% of dirt.

That number has no micron size attached to it. An efficiency percentage without a particle size is not a specification, because 96.5% of very large particles and 96.5% of very small ones are different products at the same price. Purolator's step-up part, the PurolatorONE PL35399, raises the claim to over 99% and still attaches no micron size, which suggests the omission is a house style rather than an oversight.

The catch: the listing names truck models and never names the 6.6L Duramax. Those same trucks were sold with petrol V8s in every one of those years, so a shopper matching on model and year alone has a real chance of ordering a filter for the wrong engine. The listing also sits in Amazon's Home and Kitchen category rather than Automotive, which is why it barely appears in searches for this engine.

Skip it if: you tow, run extended drains or want any filtration figure you can compare against another brand.

This is PPE's second filter in this roundup and it is a different product for a different engine generation, not a rebadge of the 114000555. PPE publishes 522 square inches of 5-micron nominal MicroPure XR media against a PF26 it describes as 259 square inches of 25-micron capability, plus a neodymium magnet, silicone anti-drainback valve, a base plate with 49% larger passages, and a 450 PSI burst rating.

Then there is the note PPE puts on its own product page and no retailer repeats. The 114002700 fuel and coolant pump relocation bracket kit is required to install this filter, because the deep can does not clear the pump in the stock position.

PPE also sells a short version, the 114000740, with 330 square inches of the same media and no bracket requirement. If you want the media upgrade without touching the pump mounting, that is the part to buy.

The catch: the bracket. It is an extra purchase and an extra job, and buying this filter without knowing that means a filter that will not go on the truck sitting on your bench during an oil change. As with PPE's other filter, the 5-micron figure is a nominal media rating rather than a measured efficiency.

Skip it if: you want to spin a filter on and drive, in which case buy the 114000740 short version instead.

Every efficiency claim in this roundup comes with an asterisk. The WIX figure was measured on a different part, the PPE figure is a nominal media rating, and ACDelco's applies to a product line. The Doc's Diesel claim of 25 microns at 99% is attributed to third-party testing of this filter.

The listing also does something the genuine WIX listing does not. It prints the full interchange: GM 12684038, ACDelco PF26, WIX WL10454, Baldwin B7449 and Premium Guard PG9952EX. That is more usable fitment information than the filter's own manufacturer publishes.

The catch: Doc's Diesel names no testing house and no standard. A 99% figure means something quite different under ISO 4548-12 multi-pass than it does single-pass, and without the standard the number cannot be lined up against the ACDelco or WIX claims. The ACDelco Silver PF63A carries GM 19363567, the service number for a 2024 or newer L5P, and it is the only genuine ACDelco listing for that part on Amazon.

If your truck is a 2024, 2025 or 2026, the PF26 filters above are the previous part for your engine position. The PF63 is the current one, and this is the ACDelco listing that names its GM number.

The problem is the line it comes from. Silver is ACDelco's economy tier, described on the listing itself as formerly appearing as ACDelco Advantage and offering economical value. It is not the Gold or Professional grade, and none of the Ultraguard specification that applies to the UPF2232R applies here.

Owners are also finding the PF63 itself has changed. A 2024 L5P owner on the Duramax forum documented that the filter he bought, GM 12735811, physically differs from the 12731742 he removed, missing a pressed-on cap at the threaded end, with GM responding only that it periodically makes engineering changes.

How We Ranked These

Nothing here was physically tested. There is no lab, no teardown, no mileage trial, and no filter was cut open for this article.

The ranking is built from published manufacturer specifications, read off each maker's own product page or catalogue rather than a retailer's summary, and cross-checked against a second document wherever one exists. The WIX numbers come from WIX's catalogue lookup, the ACDelco Ultraguard figures from GM's own service publication, the PPE figures from PPE's product pages, and the supersession claims from the manufacturers' own part searches rather than from aftermarket cross-reference charts.

Candidates were found by searching Amazon the way an owner would, then filtered. Sponsored placements were discarded before any ranking. Listings from sellers with no identifiable manufacturer were dropped, because a filter with no published specification anywhere cannot be ranked against one that has them.

Where a manufacturer publishes nothing, the specification tables say "Not published" rather than borrowing a number from a similar part. Four of the seven picks have at least one such cell, and that is the honest state of this category.

What Actually Matters When You Choose One

Match the year, not the engine code. The single most common mistake on this engine is treating "L5P" as one filter application. It is not. A 2017 to 2019 L5P takes the PF2232 group and a 2020 or newer L5P does not.

Treat an efficiency percentage with no micron size as no figure at all. Purolator's 96.5% and K&N's 99% are not comparable to each other or to anything else without the particle size and the test standard attached. The micron rating is the number that carries the meaning, and the percentage on its own is marketing.

Nominal and absolute ratings are different claims. PPE's 5-micron nominal rating is not five times better than a 25-micron figure quoted under a multi-pass standard, because the two describe different things. Nominal ratings describe what the media is built to catch. Multi-pass efficiency describes what a test rig measured.

Media area is worth more than it looks on a diesel. Diesel oil loads with soot far faster than petrol oil, and the practical limit on a filter is usually capacity rather than fineness. That is the strongest argument for the PPE filters and it is an argument about square inches, not microns.

Check whether the filter needs anything else to fit. Two of the picks here have a physical caveat: the PPE 114000750 needs a relocation bracket, and the PF63 position changed shape in 2024. Neither shows up on a spec table.

Filters That Did Not Make the List

NAPA Gold 7202 is the WIX 57202 with a different label. NAPA Gold and WIX are both MANN+HUMMEL brands and the 7202 crosses directly to the 57202 and to Carquest 84202. It is a perfectly good filter and it earns no separate section, because giving one filter two entries under two brand names is how a top ten gets padded.

WIX 57202XP looked like the obvious extended-drain pick until the specifications were compared. WIX's own catalogue gives the XP the same 15 PSI bypass, the same 335 PSI burst, the same 21-micron nominal rating, the same beta ratio and the same dimensions as the standard 57202, with synthetic media as the only listed difference. WIX's part search also returns the 57202 as a match for a 57202XP query. Its Amazon listing meanwhile claims 99% at 23 microns based on the 51515XP and caps fitment at 2014, five years short of the standard part's stated range.

WIX WL10454XP is the correct WIX XP filter for the 2020 to 2023 L5P and its Amazon listing is unusable. The title is the single word "Filter", the only bullet point is boilerplate about Stens lawn and landscape replacement parts, and the part number appears nowhere except a technical detail field. It has four ratings. The right filter, sold as though nobody wanted it found.

K&N SO-3003 publishes 99% efficiency at 30 microns and claims up to 20,000 miles of engine protection. That is the loosest particle threshold of anything considered here attached to the longest interval claim, which is a combination worth noticing rather than buying.

Baldwin has no usable listing. The B1441 is the correct Baldwin number for the 2001 to 2019 application, and the Baldwin listings that surface are titled "Baldwin Filters Oil Filter, Spin-On, Full-Flow" with no part number and no application stated anywhere on the page.

The unbranded 114000555 and 114000750 clones were dropped as a group. There are a dozen of them, they have keyword-string titles, no manufacturer website behind them and rating counts in single digits. Several print a more accurate cross-reference in their titles than the genuine WIX listing manages, which says more about the WIX listing than about the clones.

Wrong-engine traps found in live results for this engine: the ACDelco Gold PF1218 ranks highly on an ACDelco PF63 search and is a different application entirely. The Doc's Diesel D11715 and several PF66 listings are for the 3.0L Duramax LM2, a different engine that shares the Duramax name. And multiple PF63 listings are titled for the Ford F-150, which is the PF63 and Motorcraft FL-500S consolidation showing up in listing software.

Look up your truck's model year before anything else, and use that to decide which half of this list applies. 2001 to 2019 puts you in the PF2232 group and picks 1 through 4. 2020 or newer puts you in picks 5 through 7, and 2024 or newer narrows that to the PF63.

Then decide what you are buying. If it is media capacity for a truck that tows or idles, the PPE filters are the only ones that publish the number, and the L5P version needs a bracket.
