The WIX 57620 is the diesel oil filter to buy when you want to know what you are actually getting, because WIX is the only brand on this page that publishes a beta ratio, a burst pressure and a flow rate for the same part number. Every filter here is ranked on what its maker will put in writing, because the thing that ages diesel oil is soot, and no filter sold for these engines removes it.

A diesel oil filter catches dirt and wear metal. It catches almost none of the soot that turns the oil black, and your oil is built to make sure of that. Once you know why, a different set of numbers starts to matter.

Stock truck on the factory interval: buy the OEM-spec part for your platform. The Fleetguard LF16035, ACDelco UPF2232R and Motorcraft FL-2124-S are the right filters, and brand is not the lever you think it is.

If you tow, idle, plow or run short winter trips: you make soot faster than the odometer knows. Buy the WIX part for your engine, because WIX publishes the bypass setting that says when the filter stops filtering, and shorten the interval.

If you extend drains on oil analysis: no full-flow filter here gets you there. The answer is bypass filtration, sold somewhere else.

Your Oil's Job Is to Keep Soot Too Small for the Filter to Catch

Dispersant additives surround each soot particle and deactivate its polarity, which stops the particles clumping and keeps them between 0.02 and 0.2 microns. Diesel oil filters are rated between 20 and 30 microns. The soot is a hundred times smaller by design, because a filter that caught it would plug in a week.

So the soot passes through, every pass, all interval long. That is the system working.

When the dispersant is used up, by too much soot or too long an interval, the soot agglomerates past 2 microns, raises viscosity and turns abrasive. By the time your filter starts catching soot, your oil has already failed. So the ranking below rewards makers who publish a burst pressure and a bypass setting over whoever prints the biggest percentage.

1. WIX 57620: The Only Line That Publishes a Full Spec Sheet

The WIX 57620 is first because WIX is the only manufacturer here that publishes a beta ratio, a burst pressure and a flow rate for the same part, on a public page, across every diesel platform it covers.

The beta ratio is the reason. WIX's catalogue entry for the 57620 states Beta 2/20 = 20/30, which is a pair of coordinates rather than a slogan. Beta 2 is 50% efficiency and beta 20 is 95%, so that line reads as 50% of particles at 20 microns and 95% at 30 microns. It is a considerably less flattering way to describe a filter than "99% efficient", and it is checkable, which is the point.

The same catalogue gives the 57620 a 350 PSI burst pressure. A burst figure describes the pressure at which the can splits, and it matters on a cold morning when 15W-40 at minus ten will not go through loaded media, so the pressure across the filter spikes instead. The consequence for a diesel owner is that the filter you want in January is the one whose maker will name that number.

WIX carries the same disclosure across platforms, which is what earns it the top spot on a cross-platform page rather than a single-engine one. The Duramax part, the WIX 57202, publishes Beta 2/20 = 6/20, a 23.097 bar burst pressure, and a bypass valve that opens at 1.034 bar. That works out to 335 PSI and 15 PSI. No other brand on this page tells you the pressure at which its filter gives up and sends oil around the media unfiltered.

The catch: the media is enhanced cellulose, not the synthetic used in the Fleetguard, and 50% at 20 microns is a modest number written honestly rather than a strong number written loosely. WIX's disclosure is what wins here, not its filtration.

Skip it if: you want synthetic media and you own a Ram, in which case the Fleetguard LF16035 is the same size can with StrataPore inside it and a tighter published number.

2. Fleetguard LF16035: Best for a Ram Cummins

The Amazon listing still sells this filter under the Cummins Filtration name, though Fleetguard has belonged to Atmus Filtration Technologies since Cummins completed the separation in March 2024.

Buy this one if there is a Cummins in the truck and you want the part the engine was validated with. The LF16035 is the StrataPore version of the LF3972, and it is the same filter position sold as Mopar 05083285AA.

The Fleetguard LF16035 is the only filter here that states its efficiency on the certified particle-count scale, at 24.60 micron (c) for 100% removal, and the only one that tells you plainly there is no pressure valve inside the can.

That last entry is worth more than it looks. Fleetguard's specification table lists Pressure Valve: No, plainly, next to the thread size. On this engine the relief function lives in the filter head and oil cooler assembly rather than in the disposable filter, so owners who cut one open and find no bypass valve have not been sold a defective part. Do not pay extra for a diesel filter that advertises having one.

Set the Fleetguard's numbers beside the WIX 57620 and something useful falls out. Both cans are 6.94 inches tall, 3.68 inches across, on a 1-16 thread, for the same engine. WIX states 350 PSI burst and 12 to 15 GPM maximum flow. Fleetguard states a 203 PSI hydrostatic burst minimum and an 8.72 GPM rated flow. A floor and a ceiling are not two points on one scale, so anyone who has ranked these two filters by those numbers has compared a guarantee against a limit.

Choosing between them comes down to which kind of confidence you want. The WIX 57620 tells you more about how the filter behaves under pressure; the Fleetguard LF16035 gives you synthetic media and a tighter efficiency figure on the part Ram validated. On a stock truck, take the Fleetguard.

The catch: the "(c)" is a unit, not a footnote marker, and it puts this figure on the certified particle-count scale that the micron ratings on other brands' boxes do not use. A 24.60 micron (c) filter and a 25 micron filter are two measurements taken with differently calibrated instruments.

Skip it if: you are buying from a seller you do not recognise. Fleetguard is the most counterfeited name in this category, the fakes are close enough that you cannot tell from a listing photograph, and the genuine listings are third-party sellers rather than the retailer itself. On this pick the seller matters more than the brand.

3. ACDelco Gold UPF2232R: Best for a Duramax

The UPF prefix marks the Ultraguard line rather than a supersession of the PF2232, and the specification GM publishes for it appears nowhere on the retail listing.

The ACDelco Gold UPF2232R carries the most complete OEM filtration claim on this page, 98% multi-pass at 25 to 30 microns, and it is the upgraded Ultraguard filter rather than a replacement for the ordinary PF2232.

The UPF prefix is the tell that separates the two. GM's service publication states 98% multi-pass efficiency at 25 to 30 microns for the Ultraguard line, along with a shell tested to four times normal oil pressure and a spiral-wound steel core tested to twice the OE collapse requirement. A collapse rating is the number that decides whether the media folds under a cold-start pressure spike and dumps its trapped debris downstream, which on a 6.6L Duramax with 10 quarts of cold oil is not a theoretical event.

The alternative on this engine is the WIX 57202, the Duramax member of the same WIX 57620 line ranked first here. The ACDelco publishes the higher efficiency claim; the WIX publishes the 15 PSI bypass setting and the 335 PSI burst that ACDelco leaves out. The catch: the 98% figure is published for the Ultraguard line as a whole, not measured on the UPF2232R, and GM names no test standard beside it. "Multi-pass" implies ISO 4548-12 without saying so.

Skip it if: your Duramax is a 2020 or newer L5P, which takes a different filter entirely and will not accept this one.

4. Doc's Diesel D5335: Best Coverage Across Platforms

What you give up here is a manufacturer with a spec sheet. What you get is one brand that covers nearly every diesel in North America.

Doc's Diesel is the only brand on this page that catalogues an oil filter for the 6.7 Cummins, the 6.7 and 7.3 Power Stroke, the 6.6 and 3.0 Duramax, the 3.0 EcoDiesel and the VW TDI, which makes it the answer for a household with two different diesels in the driveway.

Doc's publishes a filtration figure, and it publishes the qualification alongside it, which is more than most. The company's filtration page states 25 microns at 99% efficiency for its oil filters, then adds the sentence that matters: "Filter paper tested is used in entire line of Doc's Diesel Oil Filters." That is a media claim tested once and applied across every part number, not a measurement of the D5335 in your hand.

There is a second gap on the same page. Doc's links seven third-party lab reports as proof of its filtration claims, and every one of them covers a fuel filter or a fuel and water separator. No oil filter test report sits behind the oil filter number.

The catch: an efficiency number with no test standard named and no burst figure at all puts this below the Fleetguard LF16035 on the same engine, even though the headline percentage looks better. A percentage without a standard is not comparable to anything.

Skip it if: you only ever service one truck and that truck is a Ram, because the Fleetguard fits the same mount and publishes more.

5. Motorcraft FL-2124-S: Best for a Power Stroke

Searching Amazon for FL2124S returns the superseded FL2051S as the first result, so the genuine current part is easiest to buy inside this three-filter Motorcraft kit.

Ford superseded the FL-2051-S with the FL-2124-S, most buying guides still name the old number, and the genuine current filter is easiest to buy inside a Motorcraft kit rather than on its own.

Motorcraft's part data lists the FL-2124-S as superseding four earlier numbers: FL-2051-S, FL-2051, BC3Z-6731-A and BC3Z-6731-B. Ford introduced it alongside the variable-volume oil pump to support longer drain intervals, and its application runs from 2011 F-250s through 2026 F-750s, which is every 6.7 Power Stroke pickup Ford has built. The old number has not left the shelf, though, and it still outranks the new one in search results for the new one. The kit below bundles the genuine FL-2124-S with an FA2031 air filter and an FD4647 fuel filter for 2020 to 2024 Super Duty trucks. It costs you the ability to buy one filter at a time and it gets you the current part.

Ford publishes no efficiency percentage, no burst pressure and no bypass setting for either number. On a page where the WIX 57620 and the Fleetguard LF16035 both hand you three figures each, that silence is what puts the Motorcraft fifth rather than higher.

If the kit is more filters than you want, Doc's Diesel catalogues a single oil filter for the same truck. You trade Ford's validation for a published efficiency figure, which is the opposite trade from the one this pick makes.

6. MAHLE OX 345/7D: Best for a Diesel That Is Not a Pickup

Not every diesel in the driveway is a three-quarter-ton pickup, and the five filters above will not fit any of them. This one sits sixth on reach, not on merit: it publishes the finest filtration figure here and fits the narrowest slice of readers.

The MAHLE OX 345/7D is the OE-supplier cartridge for the Mercedes-built OM642 3.0L V6, which means Sprinter vans, the Jeep Grand Cherokee CRD, Freightliner Sprinters and the Dodge Sprinter, and it is the only pick here that is not a spin-on can.

The design difference is the useful part. A cartridge filter is a bare paper element that drops into a permanent housing on the engine, so there is no steel shell to burst and no anti-drainback valve inside the filter. MAHLE's ECO designation means the element is metal-free and incinerable. For the owner, the consequence is that the failure modes that dominate spin-on filters, a split seam or a collapsed base plate, are not available to this part, and the housing O-ring becomes the thing that leaks instead.

The filtration figure is the surprise. MAHLE names this exact filter family in its own technical material and states that the OX 345 D removes up to 95% of particles just 10 microns in size, against up to 40% for conventional media. That is the finest published figure on this page by a wide margin, and it comes from a fully synthetic multilayer plastic-fibre medium rather than paper or cellulose fleece. MAHLE also welds the end plates rather than bonding them with adhesive, which removes the leak path that lets unfiltered oil slip past a glued seam.

Ten microns matters more here than the number alone suggests. Wear in a diesel is driven by silt-sized particles in the 1 to 10 micron band, the range every 20-to-30-micron filter on this page passes straight through, so a medium that holds most of it is doing work the others are not attempting.

The catch: MAHLE attaches the 95% figure to the OX 345 D, the filter family this cartridge belongs to, rather than to the /7D suffix specifically, and names no test standard beside it. It is the same species of qualification as the ACDelco line claim and the Doc's Diesel media claim, so read it as a statement about the medium rather than a measurement of the part in the box.

Skip it if: you are servicing a 2.0L TDI or a 3.0L EcoDiesel, which use different MAHLE cartridges, and Doc's Diesel catalogues both.

The Brands That Publish Nothing

Three names diesel owners recommend constantly did not make the ranking, and the reason is the same in every case.

Five of the six filters ranked here publish a filtration figure and only Ford publishes nothing, but no two of the five are measured the same way, so the column cannot be read as a league table.

Donaldson sells the DBL7349 as its Cummins part and it is one of the most-bought filters in the category. Donaldson describes its Synteq media qualitatively and, as our Donaldson cross reference guide found, publishes no efficiency percentage on its own pages. The 99% at 15 microns figure that circulates for the DBL7349 is a third-party attribution, not a Donaldson specification.

Baldwin makes the BD7317 dual-flow filter that Cummins owners fit in the stock position, and the B7577 bypass spin-on. Both are real parts with a real manufacturer behind them, and both are effectively undocumented in public: Baldwin's own product pages are gated to the point of being unreadable, so every micron figure and every burst rating quoted for these parts traces back to a reseller rather than to Baldwin. A specification nobody at the company has signed is not something to rank a filter on.

The white-label multipacks are the largest single group excluded here. Search any of these part numbers and you get two-packs, three-packs and six-packs stamped with the OEM number under a brand with no company behind it. There is nobody to ask what is inside, which is reason enough on a part that stands between your oil pump and your bearings.

The Only Thing That Touches Soot Is Not Sold on Amazon

If you are extending drain intervals, the honest answer is that you are shopping in the wrong aisle.

Bypass filtration takes roughly 5% of the oil pump's output, pushes it slowly through a very restrictive element, and returns it to the sump rather than the engine. The slow flow is what allows it to catch small particles. AMSOIL states its bypass element is 98.7% effective at removing particles down to 2 microns and describes it as an effective soot-removal device, which is a claim no full-flow filter on this page makes at all.

AMSOIL sells direct through its own site and dealer network rather than through Amazon, so you will not find it beside the six picks above. Baldwin's B7577 bypass spin-on is buyable here, but Baldwin publishes nothing about it, which is the same problem that kept Baldwin out of the ranking.

One caution worth more than the hardware. Extending an interval on the strength of a bypass filter without oil analysis is how the dispersant depletion described above happens, and viscosity rise is a signal that arrives too late. If you go this route, test the oil.

The Basis for This Ranking

Every figure quoted above comes from the company that makes the filter: Fleetguard's specification table for the LF16035, WIX's catalogue entries for the 57620 and 57202, GM's service publication for the Ultraguard line, Doc's Diesel's own filtration page, and MAHLE's technical material on the OX 345 D. Retail listings were used only to confirm that a part number is real, current and buyable, which is the one thing a shop genuinely knows.

The order rests on three things: whether the published figure names a test standard, whether it describes the part or only the product line it belongs to, and how many diesel platforms the line covers. That is why WIX leads with an unflattering beta ratio while filters advertising 99% sit below it, and why a percentage with no standard attached counts for less here than a burst pressure that does.

Nothing was physically tested and no filter was cut open for this article. Where a figure circulates only on third-party sites it is named as an attribution rather than repeated as fact, and where a manufacturer publishes nothing the tables say so rather than borrowing a number from a similar part.

Questions Diesel Owners Ask About Oil Filters

Do diesel oil filters remove soot?

Almost none of it. Dispersant additives in diesel oil hold soot particles between 0.02 and 0.2 microns, and full-flow oil filters for these engines are rated between 20 and 30 microns. Soot only becomes large enough for a filter to catch once the dispersant is depleted and the particles agglomerate past 2 microns, at which point the oil has already failed.

What micron rating should a diesel oil filter be?

Is a synthetic media diesel oil filter worth it?

On a stock truck run to the factory interval, the difference between synthetic and cellulose media is smaller than the difference between the right part and the wrong one. Synthetic media such as Fleetguard's StrataPore holds more contaminant at a given restriction, which matters most if you tow heavy, idle for long periods or run extended intervals.

Why does my Cummins oil filter have no bypass valve?

Because the pressure relief function sits in the filter head and oil cooler assembly on that engine rather than inside the disposable can.
