PF63 Oil Filter Cross Reference: What Vehicles Does It Fit?

The ACDelco PF63 is a General Motors spin-on oil filter with an M22 x 1.5 thread and a 22 PSI bypass valve. It fits GM cars and trucks built from 2012 onward, covering the 3.6L V6, 5.3L and 6.2L V8, 4.3L V6 and 6.6L L8T gas engines. It replaced the discontinued PF63E.

That last sentence is where most PF63 confusion starts, and the retailer listings claiming this filter fits a Ford F-150 are where it ends. Both have real explanations, and both are worth understanding before you buy anything.

What the PF63 Is, and What It Replaced

The PF63 is the current service part. GM has discontinued the PF63E and superseded it to a plain PF63, which is stated as a direct answer in the frequently asked questions on GM's own parts catalogue for part number 12735811.

So a PF63E callout in an older owner's manual, an older workshop manual or an older parts list is not an error. It is a part number that no longer exists, and the PF63 is what you buy instead.

The name change matters more than it looks. The PF63E was itself an upgrade, introduced in 2012 when GM redesigned its V6 with tighter tolerances and raised the oil pressure to suit. GM's 2015 service bulletin describes the new filter as having a compression spring loaded nylon poppet bypass valve, five times greater burst strength than most engine oil operating pressures, and 98 percent single-pass filtering efficiency at 25 to 30 microns. The bypass opening pressure went from 100 kPa to 150 kPa in that same change.

What Vehicles Take a PF63?

GM's own service documentation approaches this by engine, not by model. The 2023 revision of bulletin 17-NA-157 applies to all GM passenger cars and trucks from 2012 to 2024 running 27 listed engine RPO codes, including L3A, L83, L86, L8B, L8T, L96, LCV, LEA, LF3, LFX, LGW, LGX, LLT, LT1, LT4, LTG and LYX. Those cover the Small Gas Engine, Large Gas Engine, High Feature V6 Gen 2 and Small Block Gen 5 families.

Translated into vehicles, and cross-checked against the application list FRAM publishes for the PH10575, the aftermarket part that replaces the PF63, the GM coverage looks like this.

The table above is built from GM's bulletin coverage, which is a gas engine list. One application sits outside it and belongs here anyway.

From the 2024 model year GM moved the 6.6L Duramax diesel onto the PF63 as well, sold as the PF63A under GM number 19363567, replacing the PF26 that 2020 to 2023 L5P trucks used. So a Silverado 2500HD of the same year can now take a PF63 whether it left the factory with the 6.6L L8T gas V8 or the 6.6L Duramax diesel, which is a coincidence of displacement rather than a shared engine. Which filter a given Duramax model year actually takes is worth checking before ordering, because the changeovers fall on years rather than engine codes.

Which vehicles does it not fit?

The Corvette is the trap. Despite running engines from the same Small Block Gen 5 family named in the bulletin, it does not appear on the PF63 application list, and neither does the V8 Camaro. Both take a different ACDelco number.

The 2015 bulletin also carves out police vehicles equipped with RPO 9C1 or 9C3 from its otherwise identical model list. If you are servicing a fleet Impala or Caprice, check the RPO sticker rather than the model year.

Why Retailer Listings Say a PF63 Fits a Ford F-150

This claim appears on major retailer product pages, usually worded as "fits select 2014 to 2023 Chevrolet Silverado, 2011 to 2023 Ford F-150". It is not fabricated, and it is not correct either.

What happened is that several filter makers consolidate the GM group and the Ford group into a single aftermarket part number. FRAM's PH10575 application list runs Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC straight into Ford Edge, Escape, Expedition, Explorer, F-150, Mustang and Transit, plus Lincoln and Mercury. Purolator does the same thing with the L22500, and so does NAPA with the 7502.

The listing software then reads that combined application list, sees the PF63 sitting in the same interchange group, and prints the whole thing under the ACDelco number. The Ford applications belong to the Motorcraft FL-500S, not to the PF63.

WIX is the useful control here, because it refuses to merge them. Its catalogue gives the 57502 a purely Ford and FOMOCO OE list, including AA5Z-6714-A, and gives the WL10255 a single OE number, General Motors 19330000, which is exactly the GM number the 2015 bulletin assigns to the PF63E. Two filters, two OE families, one aftermarket part number at the brands that merge them.

The practical answer: a PH10575 or an L22500 will physically fit and function on both vehicles. A filter sold as a PF63 is a GM part with GM applications, and an F-150 owner should be ordering an FL-500S or its stated equivalent.

PF63 vs PF64 vs PF48: The Number That Actually Matters

This is the confusion GM has written two bulletins about, and it is not about size.

The engines here are factory built with a PF64, not a PF63. GM's explanation is that the PF64 meets the PF63E specification, but the PF63E can is too long for the engine plant's assembly line process, so the shorter filter goes on at the factory and the longer one is the service part.

The PF48 is the one that causes damage. It looks almost identical to a PF64 and is very close in can size, which is why it gets substituted at the counter. GM states the difference plainly: PF48 and PF48E open their bypass at 15 PSI, while the PF64 and PF63 open at 22 PSI.

A replacement filter with a bypass opening pressure of 15 PSI or less allows debris to circulate in the engine, causing damage to bearings and other tight tolerance areas, which may result in premature engine failure.

That is GM's own wording, and it is the reason this is a specification question rather than a fitment question. The same trap exists in the aftermarket: WIX lists the 57060 with a bypass opening pressure of 0.827 bar, about 12 PSI, and that filter threads on perfectly.

PF63 Cross Reference to Other Brands

The numbers below are the ones that appear on manufacturer documentation rather than on aggregator charts. FRAM's competitor list for the PH10575 names both the PF63 and the PF63E directly, along with the GM numbers 19330000, 12690385, 12707246 and 89017525.

One disagreement is worth flagging rather than smoothing over. FRAM lists both the WIX 57502 and the WIX WL10255 as equivalents to the same part, but WIX's own catalogue separates them by height and by OE family: the 57502 is 103.9 mm tall with Ford OE numbers, the WL10255 is 113.6 mm tall with the GM number. For a GM application the WL10255 is the one anchored to the right OE part.

FRAM's own PH10575 is 4.06 in tall, shorter than either. That is normal for a consolidated aftermarket part and it is not a defect, but it does mean the aftermarket filter is not a dimensional copy of the OE can.

Two figures are missing from that table on purpose. GM does not publish a can height for the PF63 that can be separated from its packaging dimensions, and the 6.2 in figure repeated across retailer listings is not the height of the filter. The superseded PF63E measured 4.44 in, and WIX's OE-matched WL10255 is 113.6 mm, or 4.47 in, so the real can is in that range.

GM also does not publish an efficiency or micron rating for the current PF63. The 98 percent at 25 to 30 microns figure that circulates belongs to the PF63E and comes from the 2015 bulletin. FRAM rates the PH10575 at 95 percent efficiency with a 16 to 28 PSI bypass setting, which is the closest published aftermarket equivalent.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the PF63 the same as the PF63E?

Functionally yes, and GM treats them as one part. The PF63E has been discontinued and superseded to the PF63, so a manual calling for a PF63E is satisfied by a PF63. The gasket dimensions differ slightly between the two, but the thread, the mounting and the 22 PSI bypass setting are unchanged.

Can I use a PF48 instead of a PF63?

No. The PF48 threads on and looks similar, but its bypass valve opens at 15 PSI instead of 22 PSI. GM warns that a filter at 15 PSI or below lets debris circulate through an engine designed for the higher setting, which can damage bearings.

Why did my new GM truck come with a PF64 if the manual says PF63?

Both filters meet the same internal specification. The PF63 can is too long for the engine assembly line, so GM builds with the shorter PF64 and specifies the PF63 as the service replacement. Some factory-fitted filters even carry a label naming the PF63 as the correct replacement.

Does a PF63 fit a Ford F-150?

No. The listings that say so are reading a consolidated aftermarket application list. The F-150 takes a Motorcraft FL-500S, and the aftermarket filters that replace the PF63 happen to replace the FL-500S as well, which is what merges the two lists.

What to Do With This

Start from the engine RPO code rather than the model name, then confirm the bypass rating on whatever you are about to buy. Every serious failure mode in this interchange group comes from a filter that fits perfectly and vents at the wrong pressure, which is exactly the kind of substitution a general oil filter cross reference chart will not warn you about.

If you are switching away from the ACDelco part, the choice of brand matters less than matching the specification, and the interval you run it to should come from your own manual rather than the filter box.
