Super Tech oil filter numbers are Champion Laboratories catalogue numbers wearing a Walmart label. Most of them share their digits with the matching FRAM number, so ST3614 and PH3614 are the same filter, but the shortcut breaks on cartridge filters and there is no official Super Tech lookup tool anywhere.

Super Tech is the filter brand almost every American driver has held and almost nobody can look up. Walmart sells it, the box gives you a number, and then the trail goes cold: there is no manufacturer catalogue, no cross reference page, and no published specification sheet with the brand's name on it.

What follows is the part of the picture that is actually documented, plus a plain statement of where the documentation stops. That second half matters more than usual this year, because the factory that made these filters closed in February 2026.

Who makes Super Tech oil filters now?

For decades the answer was Champion Laboratories, the Albion, Illinois filter plant that also produced the Champ, Luber-finer and STP lines. That answer stopped being true on 23 February 2026.

A letter to employees from First Brands Group announced that the Albion Oil facility was permanently closed, effective immediately, after a sale of the business fell through. Champion Laboratories had filed for bankruptcy the previous month, following the Chapter 11 collapse of its parent, First Brands Group, which also owned FRAM.

The plant did not stay dark. Premium Guard Inc bought the Champion Labs assets along with equipment from the legacy FRAM plant in Greenville, Ohio, and in June 2026 announced it would reopen the Albion facility and restore nearly 200 jobs. The same company now owns the FRAM brand.

What is not confirmed is who supplies Walmart today. Walmart has published no supplier announcement, and Premium Guard's releases do not name Super Tech among the programmes it runs. Anything you read that flatly states "Super Tech filters are made by Champion Laboratories" was written before February 2026 and has not been updated.

Is there an official Super Tech oil filter lookup?

No. Walmart is the only place a Super Tech number can be matched to a vehicle, and its listing pages are the closest thing to a catalogue the brand has. There is no Super Tech technical site, no downloadable application guide and no cross reference database published by the brand owner.

That is the reason every Super Tech search sends you to an aggregator chart, and it is also why so many of those charts disagree with each other. When no manufacturer publishes the source data, chart operators build rows from whatever they can scrape.

Two lookups do exist that are published by a manufacturer rather than a chart site. The first is K&N's cross reference index for SuperTech, which lists eighteen Super Tech oil filter numbers, two air and eight cabin air, and maps each to K&N parts. The second is the Champ Filtration catalogue's cross reference search, which queries the same Champion Laboratories part data these filters came from.

Both are partial. K&N's index covers a fraction of the Super Tech range, and neither tool is a substitute for confirming the filter physically fits before you thread it on.

Do Super Tech numbers match FRAM numbers?

Often, and it is the single most useful thing to know about the brand. Super Tech ST3614 and FRAM PH3614 carry the same digit block, as do ST16 and PH16, ST3980 and PH3980, ST9688 and PH9688.

The reason is not that Super Tech copied FRAM. Super Tech numbers come out of the Champion Laboratories catalogue, the same catalogue behind STP's S-numbers and Champ's own PH-numbers, and that catalogue overlaps heavily with FRAM's. Until this year the two brands even shared a parent company.

There is one piece of independent corroboration worth having. K&N's catalogue answers both SuperTech ST9688 and FRAM PH9688 with the same K&N part, HP-1004, which is a manufacturer confirming the pairing rather than a chart asserting it.

Where the shortcut fails: cartridge filters

This is the failure that catches people, and no other Super Tech guide mentions it. FRAM encodes the body style in the prefix, so an Extra Guard spin-on is PH and an Extra Guard cartridge is CH. Super Tech encodes nothing: every oil filter in the line is ST, spin-on or cartridge.

So "swap ST for PH" produces a part number that does not exist whenever the filter is a cartridge. ST9972 is a cartridge for Lexus and Toyota, and its FRAM counterpart is CH9972, not PH9972. The same is true of ST9018 and ST11665, which answer to CH9018 and CH11665.

Where the shortcut fails: the catalogue diverges

The second failure is subtler. Because the numbers come from the Champion Laboratories catalogue rather than FRAM's, the two only agree where the catalogues happen to overlap, and they do not always overlap.

The clearest documented case sits in the STP line, where S2808 crosses to FRAM PH3593A and no FRAM PH2808 exists at all. Treat a matching digit block as a strong lead rather than a guarantee, and confirm it against fitment before you buy.

One row carries different evidence from the rest. The ST9688 application is not taken from a Super Tech listing but from K&N's catalogue, which answers ST9688 and PH9688 with the same part, and that group is an import passenger car family.

Note the last three rows. Every one of them is a cartridge, the FRAM prefix changes to CH, and a mechanical "add PH" would send you to a number that does not exist.

For the wider interchange, the Champ twin is the more reliable pivot than the FRAM number. Super Tech ST and MP: what the two tiers mean

Super Tech runs two grades, and they use the same digits. ST is the standard filter, sold on a 10,000 mile claim. MP is Maximum Performance, sold on a 20,000 mile claim and marketed for full synthetic oil.

The practical consequence is a neat one: MP2 and ST2 are the same fitment in two grades, so once you know your ST number you already know your MP number. Whether the extra grade is worth it depends on your actual drain interval rather than on the number printed on the box.

What Super Tech publishes about efficiency

Nothing, in the technical sense. There is no Super Tech data sheet, no ISO 4548-12 result and no micron rating published under the brand name anywhere. Retail listings carry a 99% filtering efficiency claim with no particle size attached, which is a marketing figure rather than a specification.

The nearest thing to a real number comes from the manufacturer rather than the brand. Champion Laboratories states that its Champ oil filters use media engineered from natural and synthetic fibres to provide up to 98% efficiency, again with no micron size attached. Its published construction spec for that line lists a combination relief and anti-drainback valve, a nylon core, thermally bonded non-metallic end caps and a dual-flow concave base plate.

Widely quoted figures of "99% at 30 microns" for Super Tech trace to forum posts reading box copy, not to a published test. If you need a real efficiency number to compare filters, a micron rating only means something when the test standard is named, and Super Tech names none.

What to do when your Super Tech number is discontinued

Numbers leave the range without notice, and the ST7317 is the standard example. It was dropped, leaving owners of the vehicles it covered hunting for a substitute, and the Super Tech range now answers that application through the MP tier instead.

The workable method is to cross out of the brand rather than around inside it. Take the number, find the FRAM or Champ equivalent, then look up what that filter crosses to in a brand with a real published catalogue, such as WIX or K&N. You will end up with a part you can verify by thread size, gasket diameter and bypass pressure instead of by hoping a shelf tag is right.

Are Super Tech oil filters any good?
